Insider Tips for Kickstarting Your Career

Welcome to the "real" world, as most people say once you graduate.

Can you remember what you felt while waiting for your graduation, during, and after the event? I know it's a mix of excitement, relief and anxiety – quite overwhelming if I do say so myself.

After all the hustle and bustle, the question becomes, “What’s next?”

Looking for that first ever job is undeniably difficult. I’ve been through it myself.

To help you out, here are some things I did when I was trying to headstart my career:

  1. Set Clear and Realistic Goals – This is the first step toward adulthood, and that’s what makes it challenging. But what you can do is to write down your future goals, then categorize and divide them into which ones you can achieve now and which ones you can return to later.

  2. Draw Up Your Requirements – It is important that you have a copy – whether it be on hand or digital – possible requirements for your job hunting such as your CV or resume, diploma, transcript of records, and some government valid IDs. This step ensures that you are well-prepared for potential opportunities (including those you don’t expect!).

  3. Prepare Your Profile – Maximize your job search effectiveness! You may learn more about tips on how make your CV stand out and impress recruiters with your online profile. Enhance your profile's impact and you'll be able to increase your chances of securing desirable job opportunities.

  4. Be Resourceful – While job hunting or waiting for your official graduation, you can enroll in various free online courses or training that will help add value to your skill set. The good news is there are many absolutely free training courses on different websites such as LinkedIn, Google, and Coursera.

  5. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses – It is a must that you know your strengths and weaknesses so that you may use them to your advantage when applying for jobs. Yes, even your weaknesses because other than being one of the most common questions asked by interviewers, it also conveys your self-awareness which impacts how you work.

  6. Be Prepared for the Interview – While it can feel like an emotional roller coaster, gearing up for your interviews is key to navigating the process with confidence and professionalism. By dedicating time to prepare, you demonstrate your commitment to the role and showcase who you are as a team member.

  7. Reward yourself – Lastly, remember to take a break and to reward yourself. After all, celebrating small wins is important because it keeps you motivated to find work and achieve your goals.

That is it! I hope you learned something and remember that it’s okay to be afraid. What’s important is to still try despite the fear. As the saying goes: do it scared, do it anyway!

And after congratulating yourself when you land that first job, remember that this is only the beginning. So, don't forget to be adaptable to not just your new environment, but the feedback you receive as well. Consider each day as a fresh learning opportunity!

Who knows? You might be able to land a job here at Frontline Accounting which has been the perfect training ground for me and many others in our team.
