Working with remote teams has never been easier. Technology has allowed us to access and work seamlessly with talent in countries like the Philippines that would have never been possible 20 years ago.
However, while technology bridges geographical gaps, nothing can quite replace the impact of spending quality, face-to-face time with your offshore team.
I recently spent ten days in the Philippines for our Frontline Christmas party where I was able to spend time with my team, but I also witnessed firsthand the transformative power of these in-person interactions for firms.
Many of our Australian clients joined their Filipino teams, celebrating together, sharing stories, and deepening connections. These visits proved invaluable for fostering trust, understanding cultural nuances, and building camaraderie.
As one client shared:
"Meeting our team face to face has been game changing, for them, and for us."
Here’s why trips like this matter so much:
1. Stronger Relationships
In-person interactions allow for a deeper level of communication that is hard to replicate online. When team members meet face-to-face, they share not just work updates but also personal stories, jokes, and experiences that strengthen bonds.
One client remarked: "We’ve developed a connection that we didn’t previously have."
Another client elaborated on how the trip strengthened team unity:
"We brought our manager from Australia who trains the team….to meld the Aussie team and the Filipino team together has been so good, and we know that when we go back to Australia there’s going to be this connection between everybody, which is going to be even better than it is now."
2. Enhanced Training and Development
Face-to-face training sessions are more dynamic and engaging, enabling participants to ask questions in real-time and build practical skills in a collaborative environment. These sessions ensure that teams are aligned on goals and best practices.
3. Cultural Appreciation
Understanding each other’s cultures is key to integrating offshore teams into the larger business. Visiting the Philippines allows leaders to experience the hospitality, work ethic, and values that make their team unique.
As one client aptly put it: "Come celebrate with your team, not everything is about spreadsheets—it’s about people."
Bringing your team to your home country too, allows your offshore staff to experience the culture of the firm they work for. Whether that’s a two-week trip to the office to train in Australia, or Canada, or wherever your firm is.
4. Improved Morale and Loyalty
When leaders travel to meet their offshore teams, it sends a powerful message: "You are valued."
This gesture boosts morale, increases job satisfaction, and demonstrates long-term commitment, all of which lead to higher retention and engagement.
A client who has a long term, stable team captured this sentiment: "It’s really important that I come back and catch up with the team as much as I can."
5. Gratitude and Acknowledgement
In-person visits also offer the opportunity for leaders to show their appreciation for the hard work and dedication of their teams.
One client shared heartfelt thanks: "It’s always hard to put into words how thankful and grateful I am. With my team.
Totally wonderful people, their work effort is amazing, their commitment is first class, and I very much appreciate everything that the team does, every single day of the week."
6. Long-Term Results
Building strong, personal connections results in better collaboration, smoother communication, and a more unified company culture. The ripple effect of these relationships is reflected in higher productivity and lower staff turnover.
As one client encouraged: "You really should invest that time with your team."
While regular virtual check-ins are essential, face-to-face time with your offshore team is a game-changer.
Trips like these demonstrate leadership’s dedication to investing in their people, which not only enhances performance but also cultivates a workplace culture where everyone feels connected, respected, and inspired.
As businesses strive to stay competitive in a global economy, the value of genuine human connection cannot be overstated. After all, it’s not just about getting the work done—it’s about building a team, no matter the distance.
